Generating EPUB documents with a click
Check
After several test runs, I analyzed the EPUB documents generated by writer2ePub for syntax errors: Faulty implementations of the EPUB standards lead to unpleasant results on readers and in PC programs. The International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF) provides an online validator [5] that lets you check individual files for compliance. In our lab, all the documents generated with writer2ePub contained only a single error, but one that had no affect on the document (Figure 5).
Conclusions
The OpenOffice plugin writer2ePub finally provides simple, fast-working software for converting documents from ODT or text format to EPUB files. The plugin impresses with easy installation and good implementation of the EPUB2 standards. However, it still lacks some important features that make it possible to implement documents, or documents with outlines and footnotes.
The font selection dialog is fairly rudimentary, but that will likely change soon given the rapid pace of development. If you want to convert smaller documents, such as speeches, letters, or how-tos, writer2ePub already provides excellent service.
