CentOS 5.3 Available
The Linux distro CentOS, a free Red Hat clone, is now available in version 5.3 to match that of RHEL 5.3.
Because the new CentOS is based on the GPL licensed sources of Red Hat (known as the "Upstream OS Provider"), it brings with it enhancements in Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5.3. Among them, OpenJDK under GPLv2, Java Technology Compatibility Kit (TCK) conformance and support for Intel's 64-bit Core i7 (Nehalem) processors. Further details are in the release notes.
Next to including the changes inherited from the upstream RHEL 5.3, the new CentOS has a few of its own. Users can enable external repositories at install time. And based on community requests for user contributed packages, the contribs repository is now again included, with submittals to fill the repository in the coming weeks.
ISO images for 32-bit and 64-bit systems are ready for download from the CentOS servers.
