DigitalOcean Ends Open Source Credits Program

Oct 12, 2026

In a change that has surprised many open source developers, DigitalOcean has decided to sunset its Open Source Credits Program.

A Reddit user recently posted a communication they received from DigitalOcean, indicating that it was ending its Open Source Credits Program.

This program was designed to provide free cloud infrastructure credits to open source software projects to help cover hosting and operation costs. This comes after the company recently stopped participating in the GitHub Student Developer Pack.

"DigitalOcean has decided to sunset the Open Source Credits Program. As part of this change, we are no longer accepting new credit applications or approving credit renewals, extensions, or additional credit requests," the letter states.

DigitalOcean will honor current credits, saying, "If you currently have Open Source Credits that have already been granted, those credits will continue to be honored according to their existing terms and conditions. No action is required for your existing credit allocation."

The company also noted that the Open Source Credits Program inbox will no longer be monitored as part of the transition; any questions should be submitted through DigitalOcean’s standard support channel.

This program is being quietly ended, with no official announcement to be found anywhere on the DigitalOcean site.

The change originally came to light from this discussion on the Node.js GitHub repository.
