Pocket Office: Portable OpenOffice 3.0.1 for Windows and Wine
The new OpenOffice 3.0.1 is the release of a portable, USB loadable version of OpenOffice.
OpenOffice Portable differs from a normal OpenOffice installation in that the portable office suite is independent of system-installed libraries. Version 3.0.1 comes with all the libraries it needs, which means it can be installed and started from a USB stick -- unfortunately this currently only applies to Windows with, according to the website, Linux available on Wine at least.
The latest pocket office release brings numerous improvements over its predecessor. These include freedom of named dependencies and additional localization, (French, Spanish, Russian and Portuguese).
Besides all the modifications and bugfixes, the latest version comes with a new installer which enables the installation from USB. The installer recognizes and updates former installations without changing user preferences or documents.
The software is available for download here. Visitors to Germany's CeBIT can learn more about the free office package in a lecture by Andreas Mantke on March 8, between 13:00 and 13:45, in Hall 6 at the International Trade Show for Communication and Technology in Hanover.
