Google and O'Reilly will present open source awards at OSCON again this year. Allison Randall's recent blog post says that you have until May 15th to send in your nominations to osawards AT oreilly DOT com. According to Allison, you can't nominate Google or O'Reilly employees and "Nominations should include the name of the recipient, any associated project/org, suggested title for the award ("Best Hacker", "Best Community Builder", etc.), and a description of why you are nominating the individual."ROSE Blog: Rikki's Open Source Exchange

If you are hosting an event and want more women to attend, lining up some interesting female speakers is a great way to start. Geekspeakr.com to the rescue. According to the site: "Many organisers of technical conferences, meetups, and dinners want to have more gender-balance in their lineups, but they don't know where to find technical women speakers. Enter geekspeakr.com, a simple directory and connections system to help technical women speakers and event organisers to find each other." If you are an interesting female speaker, be sure to register and create a profile on the geekspeakr.com site. Also, check out the site to see who has already registered. The list of topics...Apr 11, 2008 GMT
Mackenzie wrote an interesting observation about how geek women are perceived and how they present themselves. If you are a woman in open source, you've probably had similar experiences to what she and her friend Elfine have in this field. (As for Elfine's EeePC, I think I'd like one in pink, too, and also every other color.)Apr 11, 2008 GMT
Here it is, Friday. How did that happen without a single ROSE Blog post? First, IT360 in Toronto, followed by a day catching up on our next magazine issue and then traveling to San Francisco for LugRadio Live. Two different sides of the continent, and two extremely different events. (And let me tell you, LinuxChix are everywhere! At least one stopped by the booth in Toronto.) As I was doing a quick look for what I missed this week, I ran across the Anita Borg Awards: Call for Nominations. According to the blog post on the NCWIT.org site: "The Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology (ABI) is now accepting nominations for three of its awards: the Anita Borg Social Impact...Apr 03, 2008 GMT
Monday morning I wave good-bye to the family and hop on a plane for Canada. I'm leaving myself notes around my house to remember the passport (first, I need to find it). Canada just doesn't seem so far away that it should require one, but I digress... If you make it to Toronto for IT360 or San Francisco for LUGRadio Live next week, be sure to drop by the Linux Pro Magazine booth and pick up a sample copy or just say "HI!!!" We had such a great time in Toronto last year that we had to go back again, and LUGRadio looks like it's going to be a blast. (I heart San Francisco.) See you there.Apr 01, 2008 GMT
While I'm on the subject of Emma Jane Hogbin, I should go ahead and mention the conference she organizes: HICK Tech. HICK Tech 2008 is April 30 at the Bayshore in Owen Sound. According to the site: "Following great success in 2007, HICK Tech returns in April 2008 for another year of enlightenment, inspiration, and networking. HICK Tech is a one-day conference in Owen Sound. In 2008 it will feature a keynote presentation by Heather Champ (Community Manager for Flickr) wrap-up session moderated by CBC personality Nora Young and twenty sessions under the topics of Business, Community, Food & Agriculture and Technology." The list of confirmed speakers is pretty impressive:...Apr 01, 2008 GMT
I've subscribed to Craft Magazine since the beginning and still have every issue. Today I ran across a familiar name, Emma Jane Hogbin, on the Craftzine.com blog, and now I have a face to go with it. The Craftzine.com blog shows Emma holding up a pair of hand-knit Drupal socks – can she get any cooler? Or geekier? Emma's talk at LUGRadio Live USA is at 4pm on April 12. (I don't normally drag my knitting along for these things, but I might make an exception this time and get some help with the neckline on my three-year-long sweater project.)Subscribe to our Linux Newsletters
