Transtec Actualizes Linux Server on Shanghai CPUs
Computer vendor Transtec has actualized its Calleo 330 server series on the new 45-nonometer Opterons from AMD. All Calleos now come with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 10.
AMD promises better virtualization performance and less power consumption at higher demand and the same processor rate for its Shanghai Opterons. Transtec has meanwhile pulled all its Calleo 330 series servers from the Barcelona over to Shanghai.
The configuration webpage for the Calleo servers still show the older, second generation processors. Hence, prices are probably not up to date, and it's unclear whether their statement that they "deliver your server with two of the chosen processors at no additional cost" still holds for the two new Quadcores. Transtec promises this magazine an update soon.
AMD announced the availability of its showcase chips in a recent press release. The Intel competitor also presented a recent YouTubevideo that showed a disturbance-free migration of a virtual system from an Intel server to an AMD server.
