Mageia and openSUSE
This month's 64-bit bonanza includes the GNU/Linux-based Mageia and the SUSE-sponsored openSUSE, each offering a choice of Gnome, KDE, and other graphical desktops.
Mageia 4
Mageia 4 is based on Linux kernel version 3.12.8. New to the mix in Mageia 4 are the Cinnamon and Mate desktops, along with a score of improvements, including default Bash autocompletion, udev renaming for predictable network interface assignments, a package management upgrade, and improved handling of WiFi cards and RAID devices. Many packages have been updated from Gtk2 to Gtk3.
openSUSE 13.1
From the openSUSE community, version 13.1 ships with the latest patch to kernel version 3.11. In addition to the usual choices of Btrfs, ext4, and XFS filesystems, a filesystem specifically for SSDs, F2FS, is introduced, along with experimental support for the Lustre distributed filesystem. A lot of effort was put into bug fixing this time around, and some experimental technologies make their debut, including support for Wayland and ultra-high resolution in applications.
