Mobilinux 5.0 with Power Management and SELinux
Montavista has released a new version of its Linux distribution for mobile devices
According to the distributor, the Linux kernel extension is used by various cellphone manufacturers, including NEC and Motorola. Montavista also says that the new version has improved power management and includes SELinux.
Mobilinux is a software stack that provides added functionality for mobile phones, GPS receivers or medical equipment based on the Linux kernel. Some components are proprietary and closed source: the vendor claims that this guarantees the quality of the platform and distinguishes Montavista from free projects such as OpenMoko.
Power management is improved in the current version; some configurations support up to five times the MP3 playback time. However, the patches have not been integrated with the mainline kernel as they rely on highly specific properties of individual processors, such as the Texas Instruments OMAP 2430. The kernel developers had asked Montavista to integrate their changes within the scope of a power management framework.
Montavista is also looking to add value with MicroSELinux, a modified version of the NSA security system for embedded devices. The vendor has not disclosed details of the policies they will be supplying.
