Mozilla Firefox Blocks Flash
More embarrassment for Adobe's embattled multimedia tool
The plight of Adobe Flash worsened on Monday, when Mozilla announced it was blocking Flash from running by default in the Firefox browser. Previously, users were asked to give permission to use Flash, but the software made the process fairly effortless. The new policy requires a conscious act by the user to change the configuration in order to use Flash.
Mozilla's Flash block policy is supposedly temporarily, but no one is counting on Flash to last much longer given the current climate. The Register quotes Facebook security chief Alex Stamos as saying he wants to “set a date to kill Flash.” Apple dropped Flash from the iPhone in 2010, and other vendors and websites are contemplating an end to their Flash support.
Despite the protests from experts, Flash is still running on millions of websites around the world. Mozilla says it will reinstate Flash when Adobe releases an updated version that fixes the known security problems.
