Sun Stops Solaris Express Community Edition
Sun will discontinue production of Solaris Express Community Edition (SXCE) by the end of October. A replacement is being planned.
SXCE is a binary version of the latest editions of the free operating system made especially for developers. In a bi-weekly release rhythm, Sun produced packages and components, not yet picked up by the source code of the official distro, in the form of an ISO image. This enabled the fast and uncomplicated testing and use of packages by developers, albeit without the support of Sun. This service will end in October writes Sun developer Glynn Foster on the OpenSolaris forum.
In future the latest Solaris packages will be made available as Image Packaging Systems (IPS). For now, this will take place in tandem with the SVR4 packages, but these too are to be discontinued, adds Foster. He goes on to promise community support during the changeover and updated information regarding the transition schedule as soon as it becomes available.
