OpenSolaris Live CD 2008.11 with Distro Toolbox and Automated Install
The OpenSolaris project has issued its second solid release with the Live CD 2008.11, which integrates subprojects such as the installer and package manager.
The CD image applies both to driveless bootups and installation on x86 machines. Release Candidate 2 ended up being the released version.
Among the new features of the Live CD are the Distribution Constructor with which to build an install image from a package repository, and automated installation over the Internet or through media. Also new are suspend/resume and power management for the CPU.
The CD provides a graphical GNOME tool for Sun's ZFS filesystem that helps in configuring the snapshot function, using the Nautilus file manager to step through the snapshots. The file manager, like many OpenSolaris components, falls under Sun's Common Development and Distribution License
(CDDL) version 1.0. Certain other components are governed by the OpenSolaris Binary License.
OpenSolaris 2008.11 contains additional free software such as GNOME 2.24 Desktop, OpenOffice 3.0 and the Firefox version 3 browser. Newly added in the release were top, sudo and emacs. Web developers can also get a stack with the 64-bit variants of MySQL, CherryPy, and Ruby, along with the diagnostic tool DTrace.
According to the release notes, many bugs were also fixed.
The OpenSolaris Live CD download can be by HTTP, FTP or BitTorrent.
