Torvalds Announces First Kernel 2.6.27 Release Candidate
Linus Torvalds has announced the first Release Candidate of the next kernel version 2.6.27 on the Linux Kernel Mailing List (LKML); this signals the end of the merge window.
Developers used the window to patch the kernel, adding 12MB of code. In a posting on the Linux Kernel Mailing List, Torvalds said that he was “a bit nervous” about the size of the -rc patches making the kernel at the same time, saying “it means that we are good at merging it all, but I have to say that I sometimes wonder if we don't merge too much in one go, and even our current (fairly short) release cycle is actually too big”, although the new additions, which weigh in at 12MB are no bigger than for the 2.6.24 und 2.6.25 kernels, as Torvalds notes.
The changes in 2.6.27 include the addition of the UBI filesystem for flash memory, and tracing and firmware loading enhancements. The kernel mainly includes kernel drivers and architecture updates, says Torvalds concluding the status report.
