I just got back to Kansas from my trip to SCALE 7x. Once again, the SCALE organizers and volunteers put on a great event. If you're considering rolling out your own event, you really need to take notes from the SCALE crew. (Side note: I discovered that when Californian's say "It's cold out," they mean that the temperature is in the mid-60s. In Kansas, it's not really cold until it's in the single digits. The 60s seems downright balmy.) Although I'd love to write my own event report this very second, I'm afraid I'd be slurring my words in text because I really am THAT TIRED. So, I'll start with a link to Emma Jane Hogbin's blog post, where she shares my feelings of fatigue but...ROSE Blog: Rikki's Open Source Exchange

As I browsed through my RSS feeds this morning, I ran across a video interview of Google's Leslie Hawthorn discussing Google's Summer of Code. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that our very own Anika Kehrer was the person conducting the interview. Check out the video to find out more about Open StreetMap and whether the current economy will affect the Summer of Code program.Feb 11, 2009 GMT
Next week, I'm off to SCALE. If you're headed to L.A., too, be sure to swing by the Linux Pro booth and get a copy of the magazine. I'll also be speaking at the Women in Open Source mini-conf on Friday, and I plan to discuss ways women can do a better job of "tooting our own horns," and how we (men- and women-folk) all can help draw attention to what other women in the field are doing. If you have any personal stories about how you learned to do a better job of self-promotion, or how tooting her own horn helped a colleague succeed, please leave a comment and share your story or email me at: rkite@linuxpromagazine.com. And now, a word from SCALE: Free and Open Source software...Feb 09, 2009 GMT

Happy Anniversary to my humble blog! When I look back over my past year of blogging, I have to wonder whether the FLOSSPOLS research indicating that the FLOSS community is composed of only 1.5% women is still accurate. Over the course of the past year, I've learned about individuals, groups, meetings, webinars, resources, books, dinners, organizations, mailing lists, interviews, articles, websites, and events that are by, about, or of interest to women in open source. I've also noticed a growing interest in the future of women in open source and how to help girls (or, as I like to think of them, "women-in-open-source-to-be"s) become more involved with technology. In honor of...Jan 21, 2009 GMT
