Automated Linux Installation: System Imager 4.0.0
Version 4.0.0 of System Imager, a software for automating the installation of Linux computers and for software distribution has just been released.
The new features in the latest stable version include improved support for the Debian and Ubuntu distributions. The abilit to automate the installation of Linux on the Sony Playstation 3 is also new. In addition to this, the developers have improved hardware support in general, including a new engine for PCI device detection which will ensure that the installed kernel includes all required drivers. Numerous bugfixes and new features from the 3.9.x developer branch have now been integrated with the stable version. More details are available in the changelog.
The GPL’d System Imager software is designed for administrators who need to install and maintain a large number of identical machines: Internet hosters, enterprises with standardized workplace desktops, schools with computer rooms, etc. By default, the administrator creates a perfectly configured sample machine, dubbed the Golden Client. The image from this machine is then distributed to the target machines across the network, with incremental updates being added as needed.
System Imager 4.0.0 is available in various package formats from Sourceforge, along with the PDF formatted manual.
