Dell Packs 12 Low-Power Server Boards in One 2U Chassis
Dell has announced its XS11-Vx8 server based on VIA Nano U2250 power-saving processors normally used in low-cost netbooks.
According to Dell, the Nano U2250, based on VIA's x86-64 platform, delivers 15 Watts/server at OS idle and 20-29 Watts/server at full load. Because of the low power consumption, Dell can bundle 12 server boards with these chips in a single 2U chassis.
The XS11-VX8 server, not yet available at the Dell web shop and still code-named "Fortuna," should be priced at about US$ 400. The manufacturer sees the server as an alternative to the usual power-hungry virtualization solutions and as targeting, for example, web hosting businesses.
