Intel Buys Embedded Specialist Wind River
Chipmaker Intel has paid around $900 million for Wind River's know-how in things embedded and mobile.
Intel is taking over 100% of the Wind River stock, which at $11.50 per share comes to $884 million. The California software company will bring its knowledge of embedded and mobile systems under Intel's aegis. Taking over as its new chief is Renee James, vice president and general manager of Intel's Software and Services Group, according to Intel's press release.
Embedded systems and mobile devices are by Intel's account one of their largest growth factors. The market sector includes mobile Internet devices (MIDs), smart phones, and infotainment devices for the auto industry. These devices have been a hotspot for Intel over the last few years, notably through its past ownership of Moblin and its participation with BMW in the Genivi project. Wind River was also working with some customers on adapting Android, such as for Qualcomm's Snapdragon platform.
