Linux Plumbers Conference Continues
The second day of the Linux Plumbers Conference got off to a productive start with an address by Jonathan Corbet, co-founder of LWN.net. "The Kernel Report" covered the challenges facing the kernel development community and the current or pending responses to those challenges, as well as a short summary of the Kernel Summit held earlier this week.
With the next release of the kernel, 2.6.27, due within the next few weeks, Corbet stressed two key points: that the development community at large isn't doing enough about security issues – which are increasing dramatically – and that the importance of the "upstream first" policy cannot be taken lightly. He also said that if developers aren't part of the community process, what results from that process will not meet their needs.
Overall, Corbet spoke highly of the progress the community is making, adding that by avoiding closed hardware and uncooperative development companies, the accomplishments will be even greater.
