Computer sovereignty takes on greater importance as global relationships change.

I just returned from FOSDEM, one of the largest, if not the largest, free software conferences in Europe.

I love going to conferences like this. Organized by volunteers and completely volunteer run, the energy of these events is infectious.

This year, however, there was an undertone in FOSDEM about sovereignty. Many of the talks were about European and world-wide governments and companies trying to move away from USA-based technologies due to fear that economic weaponry or perhaps even embargoes would cut off their access to needed computer technologies.
