Classmate 8.9-Inch Netbook Convertible with Linux
Intel announces the availability for use in schools of the Classmate PC Convertible.
The netbook equipped with an Atom N270 1.6-GHz processor has a bi-directional 8.9" display at 1024 x 600 pixels with keyboard or touchscreen functionality. A stylus or finger provide handwriting and drawing capabilities. The 180-degree rotatable camera serves to enhance inter-student and student-teacher communication.
Other features include 1-GByte memory, 8- or 16-GByte SSD or 60-GByte hard drive, Ethernet, WLAN, optional Bluetooth, speakers and mic. The keyboard and touchpad are water resistant. Dimensions are 240 x 180 mm, with the height ranging from 26 to 40 mm. Its weight is 1.25 to 1.44 kg depending on the battery used.
Intel dedicated a webpage to the Classmate PC, including the Convertible model and where to get it from outlets worldwide. Mandriva, Edubuntu, and other Linux versions are known to exist.
